Lead futures keep head above water

Lead futures were trading higher during morning trade in the domestic market on Monday as investors and speculators build up their positions in the industrial metal on increase in physical demand for lead, from battery-makers, in the domestic spot market. Further, a rise in physical demand from battery-makers in the domestic spot market, supported prices of lead at futures trade. At the MCX, lead futures for July 2017 contract is trading at Rs 149.15 per kg, up by 0.71 per cent, after opening at Rs 148.90, against a previous close of Rs 148.10. It touched the intra-day high of Rs 149.35 (at 10:44 hours).

Crude oil futures closed higher in the domestic market on Friday as data showed the first decline in the number of active U.S. oil rigs in 24 weeks amid fed expectations for further reductions in crude production. Still, investors remain skeptical that oil prices have stabilized because of the potential for stronger output from Libya and Nigeria, members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries who aren’t taking part in the cartel-led production-cut agreement. At the MCX, crude oil futures for July 2017 contract closed at Rs 2972 per barrel, up by 1.85 per cent, after opening at Rs 2924, against a previous close of Rs 2918. It touched the intra-day high of Rs 2972.

Gold futures closed lower in the domestic market on Friday driven by a rise in global bond yields, which diminished appetite for precious metals. A steadying U.S. dollar and equity market and mostly upbeat economic data added pressure to gold futures for the session. Fears that central banks in Europe and the U.S., some of the largest buyers of government bonds, my be shifting from a dovish to a more hawkish posture, has jolted government-bond prices lower, delivering a sudden jolt higher to yields, which move inversely to prices. Higher yields tend to increase the opportunity cost of purchasing commodities that don’t offer a yield to assets, like bonds, which are seeing yields pick up. At the MCX, gold futures for August 2017 contract ended at Rs 28471 per 10 grams, down by 0.48 per cent, after opening at Rs 28,609 against a previous close of Rs 28,608. It touched the intra-day low of Rs 28,405.

Cardamom futures rose over 1 per cent during morning trade in the domestic market on Monday as investors and speculators indulged in building up fresh positions in the agri-commodity amid rising physical demand for cardamom in the domestic spot market. Further, insufficient supplies on restricted physical arrivals from the major cardamom producing regions, buoyed the upward trend in the domestic cardamom prices. At the MCX, cardamom futures for July 2017 contract is trading at Rs 1048.10 per kg, up by 1.37 per cent, after opening at Rs 1048, against a previous close of Rs 1033.90. It touched the intra-day high of Rs 1048.10 (at 10:25 hours).
